Having screw-on caster wheels fitted to big and heavy furniture makes it easy to move and rearrange or cleaning the backside of the furniture. Screw-on casters are less for decoration purpose and more utilitarian. These are generally rubber wheels fitted at the bottom of the furniture so as to make the movement of the furniture easy. These wheels can also be locked so as to make the furniture immobile when not needed.

Caster Wheels

Materials Required:

  • 4 to 6 screw-on casters
  • Pieces of bit wood of versatile thicknesses
  • Screws
  • Strong glue
  • Drill bit for pre-drilling of screws

Procedure:

  1. Place the furniture to be fitted with screw-on caster wheels up side down so as to see where the wheels can be placed.
  2. If the furniture has legs or other ornamental woodworks then you have to work a little harder in order to fix in the wheels.
  3. First, determine the height of the caster wheels keeping in mind that it does not get blocked by the floor carpets.
  4. Now you have to develop the corners so that it the screw-on caster wheels can be fitted. Measure the deepness of the furniture legs so as to determine how much has to be drilled to fir the wheels. Now fix in bits of scrap wood with strong adhesive to increase the depth.
  5. If the furniture has no legs, then be certain that the casters are at a safe distance from the edges so that the screw of the casters don’t bursts the sides
  6. Drill in the post holes and insert the cylinders i.e. the caster wheels inside them until it fits in firmly.
  7. Slowly turn the furniture upside, taking care so that any one caster does not receive the full pressure.
  8. Once the furniture has been properly placed make sure that the each screw-in caster wheels receive equal pressure.

The furniture is now ready to be rolled. While moving the furniture always push it through the midpoint of the furniture so as to maintain proper balance.
