Measure the living room:

Measure the living room thoroughly and sketch it out on a graph paper. Make the sketch with the built-in focal point of the room which might be the fire place or the television place or any other thing in mind. Also the measure the furniture that you intend to place in the room to be sure that you fit in perfectly leaving ample space to move around.

Setting Furniture in the living room:

Before settling down with a specific furniture setting it would be better if you try a few different furniture settings. This would help you to determine in which furniture set up would suit your room the best. Here are a few things to consider:

  • Make a conversation area. Make the sitting arrangements in a way so that the people won’t have to twist their head or shout out while conversing. It is advisable that the conversation area be places near the fireplace if there is one or the window thadiyt gives the best outside view.
  • Decide the focal point of the room and arrange the furniture accordingly.
  • Make sure that there is ample space left around in the room after placing the furniture so that people won’t tip off or collide with any furniture.
  • Don’t push off the furniture against the wall. It cleats a dirty mark on the wall that would degrade the beauty of the room. If the space permits then pull the furniture away from the wall to create a more intimate setting.
  • If the room is fairly large don’t hesitate to divide the space it into two separate areas. But don’t do this by hanging a curtain or any other separator. Just arrange the furniture pieces likewise.
  • There should be considerably sufficient number of tables in the living room corresponding to the number of seating arrangements. Most of the tables that you plan to place in the living room must be lower than the height of the seating arrangements. However be careful of not over crowding the room with excessive number of tables, it has to be such that the people can put down their drinks without leaving their seat.

Adding Light and Color:

Living room is the place for you to relax, be entertained and socialize. So make sure that there is enough bright light in the room and the walls have bright paints on it. But this does not mean that it has to be too much gaudy.

Arranging the Sofas and Chairs:

Sofas are the most important piece of furniture in the living room. Be sure that its colour adapts well with the wall colour and that it fits well in the room. Also check out that the chairs and sofas are comfortable enough to sit and that it suits the purpose of the room well.

Area Rug Sizes:

Many people make an erratic mistake of using area rugs that are too small for the entire space. Be sure that the furniture pieces are sitting on it if not so the front legs of the furniture are.
